San Diego – From the
moment he arrived at Torrey Pines for the 2008 U.S. Open, Tiger
Woods felt the pain. His left knee, which had undergone arthroscopic
surgery eight weeks prior to the championship, was still throbbing
and the agony was noticeable each time the world's No. 1 player
took a mighty swing at the ball.
But Woods came to southern California determined to win on a course
he has dominated. He won at Torrey Pines as a junior and owned six
victories as a professional at the PGA Tour's annual Buick Invitational,
including 2008. So even if he had to play on only good knee, Woods
was going to grit it out. While Rocco Mediate gave Woods all he
could handle for 72 holes of regulation play and another 19 in a
thrilling Monday playoff, in the end Tiger walked away with his
third U.S. Open title and 14th major championship of his illustrious
career.
The first U.S. Open in southern California in 60
years proved to be a smashing success with huge galleries, enormous
television ratings and a record 2.9 million people watching the
Mnday playoff via the Internet. Days after his victory, the world
came to know just the extent of Woods' injury. As it turned out,
Woods needed reconstructive knee surgery due to torn ligaments.
The U.S. Open was Woods' last competitive event for 2008 and you
could say he went out in style. More
